Colposcopy
Colposcopy is the test that is performed when a smear test is abnormal. It involves the examination of the cervix using a specially designed microscope.

A woman is examined in a gynaecological couch and a speculum is inserted. Special dyes (acetic acid and Iodine) are placed on the cervix. Precancerous cells stain differently to normal cervix and abnormal areas can be biopsied and sent for analysis. The procedure is not painful and can be done in the outpatients without anaesthetic.
