Prevention
National training programmes exist for the prevention of cervical cancer. This involves smear tests, colposcopy, and treatment of pre-cancer where appropriate. Vaccines are in development against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer. This may help prevent cervical cancer in the future. The vaccine that has received the most publicity recently is against HPV type 16 and 18 which cause 75% of cervix cancers.
